Artist's Note:
Temperence explores balance not as calm, but as negotiation. The figures appear fused yet separate — two presences sharing one body, each carrying its own weight, its own interior logic. Rather than harmony, the painting presents coexistence: tension held carefully enough that it does not collapse.
In tarot, Temperance is often read as moderation or peace. Here it is understood as integration — the difficult act of holding contradiction without forcing resolution. The forms lean into one another but do not dissolve; identity remains intact while exchange still occurs. What passes between them is invisible, but undeniable.
The imagery draws from mask traditions, where a face is never singular but inhabited. Each surface carries emotional residue, as though different states of being occupy the same vessel at different moments. The painting therefore becomes less a portrait and more a condition: the self as a site of dialogue.
Rather than suggesting equilibrium has been achieved, Temperence records the effort of maintaining it. Balance is shown as active work — a continual adjustment between impulse and restraint, instinct and awareness.
The work ultimately proposes that wholeness is not purity, but accommodation: the capacity to contain multiple truths without erasing any of them.
